“Have you ever seen a street shaped like a ship?” our guide asked, a mischievous glint in his eye. He gestured towards the path ahead. “Welcome to Luocheng Old Town, where the main street, over 2,000 meters long, is designed just like a giant ship sailing on the waves!” Luocheng, he explained, is nestled in the heart of Sichuan Province. This ancient town, a unique blend of history and culture, dates back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Its “ship-shaped” street, narrower at both ends and widening towards the middle, is the town’s most striking feature. “Imagine strolling down this street,” he continued, his voice filled with enthusiasm, “surrounded by traditional wooden houses, their eaves painted in vibrant colors, their beams intricately carved.” Luocheng is a melting pot, home to seven different ethnic groups – the Han, Hui, Yi, Manchu, Tibetan, Li, and Miao. This cultural diversity is reflected in every aspect of Luocheng, from its architecture to its cuisine. As you wander down the street, you’ll notice teahouses, their wooden porticos offering shade from the sun. There, you can witness the true essence of Luocheng – elderly locals engaged in animated games of mahjong, cups of steaming tea in hand. They won’t pay you much attention, lost in their own world, their laughter echoing through the air. The spirit of old Sichuan culture thrives here in Luocheng, a place where time seems to flow at a different pace. It’s a place to savor a cup of tea, listen to the echoes of the past, and experience the true heart of China.
