Here stands Lundehusskolen a place where history meets modernity. Lundehusskolen underwent a complete renovation from 2017 to 2020. The aim was to retain the school’s existing qualities. New solutions were integrated into a unified design. The renovation respected the school’s historic architectural value.

Lundehusskolen was originally built in 1943. Architect Poul Holsøe designed it. The recent renovation focused on accentuating the architectural qualities. Material qualities inherent in the school were preserved. Air, light and acoustic conditions were improved throughout. The school has been upgraded to match contemporary learning principles. There was a change in student composition. A new autism section was added in the existing gymnasium wing. Former classrooms and staff facilities now serve new functions.

The courtyard has been transformed. It was incorporated into an integrated inclusion area. This inclusion area is specifically for the new autism section. Hallways now feature built-in seating and activity niches. These can be used for group work or individual contemplation. Windows have been recessed into alcoves. These alcoves provide seating areas.

The vision was to create a more integrated Lundehusskolen. The focus was on strengthening the school’s direction. This was particularly important in the special needs section. Interior design, new fixtures and flooring were used. The solutions help all students have a better school day. There was a strong focus on creating a satisfactory indoor climate. Air, light and acoustics were improved in the classrooms.

Following the renovation Lundehusskolen has become a stimulating learning environment. It encourages play and contemplation for all children. This includes children with special challenges. The new special needs section considered the existing area. The same materials were used creating a familiar feel for the children. The special needs area contains elements for students in all age ranges.

A key element of the renovation is the colour scheme. The choice of materials was also important. These reinterpret the original school architecture. They accentuate functions, qualities and interrelationships. Visual artist Malene Bach was involved in the project. She developed a new colour palette based on the original colours. This palette complements the original and preserved floors. The new palette has been used in the architecture and furnishings with sensitivity.

The colours have a strong presence upon arrival. You can see it in the school foyer, stairwells and hallways. The large aula shows the colours around which the entire school is built. Colours are more subdued in other areas. Classrooms and group rooms allow students to focus and concentrate.

The renovation project was carried out via the TRUST strategic partnership. Architects, engineers, landscape architects and contractors worked side by side. This close collaboration optimised processes. Everyone took responsibility for the total project. Good solutions were found together.

There has been close cooperation with the users from the outset. This allowed the creation of the right solutions for different areas. It also meets the needs and wishes of the special needs section. The good cooperation between the client, users, consultants and visual artist Malene Bach is evident. The school has been updated to meet contemporary needs. This was done with respect for the existing architecture. The colours and furnishings accentuate the spatial organisation of Lundehusskolen. In 2020 Malene Back received the Farveprisen for her work on the school’s colours.

Lundehusskolen combines two worlds. It is a combination of the special school and the general school. With special classroom sections the hope is that some children can return to a class in the general school. Lundehusskolen provides a nurturing space. It creates a connection between special education and mainstream learning.
