Lundehus Kirke

Gazing at Lundehus Kirke, one might mistake it for a sleek, modern art piece. But this pyramid-shaped structure holds more than a striking silhouette. Lundehus Kirke is a testament to the persistence of a community and the vision of a groundbreaking architect. The church stands on Strødamvej in Copenhagen, a beacon in the surrounding landscape. It wasn’t always here, though. The story of Lundehus Kirke begins in the 1930s with the residents of Ryparken yearning for a spiritual home. Their initial church, a repurposed building on Rygaards Allé, served as a temporary solution. The congregation diligently saved, dreaming of a permanent sanctuary. Their patience was rewarded nearly two decades later when, in 1957, the new Lundehus Kirke opened its doors. Architect Holger Jensen, already known for his innovative church designs, embraced the triangular plot of land. He envisioned a pyramid-like structure, a “seamark” amidst the urban landscape. The bell tower, seamlessly integrated into the roofline, completes this unique design. Five decades later, the church underwent a transformation. The renovation, completed in 2007, breathed new life into the space while honoring Jensen’s original vision. The dark wood was replaced with a brighter palette. A glass wall now separates the sanctuary from the church garden, blurring the lines between the inside and the vastness of nature. The altar, placed before this window, allows the priest to face both the congregation and the world outside. Within Lundehus Kirke, a unique light globe holds court. A central light, representing Christ, is encircled by smaller lights, symbolizing the diversity of life. A Frobenius organ, installed in 1994, graces the left side of the church, its light wood complementing the architecture. High above, a model of the tea clipper “Thermopylæ” hangs suspended, a gift from engineer Tage Blum. Lundehus Kirke is more than just a church; it is a symbol of community, resilience, and innovative design.
