The Lumen United Reformed Church wasn’t always known by this name. For many years it was the Regent Square United Reformed Church. Its history stretches back much further. To 1808 when a fund was established to provide Gaelic worship in London. The church moved to its current location in 1827. This original building a miniature York Minster was a magnificent Gothic structure.
However its journey wasn’t without trials. The World Wars significantly impacted the church. During World War II a bomb destroyed the neighboring church house badly damaging the Regent Square Church. The damaged building remained standing until 1959. Discussions about renovations continued for years. The high towers of the original church were a significant feature. But ultimately the cost and maintenance issues led to its demolition.
A new building opened in 1966. This structure incorporated stained glass by Pierre Fourmaintraux. The church’s website boasts many historical images. These photographs capture the past and present glory of this place of worship. The 1960s building was later redesigned by Theis and Khan Architects. Their redesign transformed the church into a multi-faith center and cafe. They retained much of the interior design. Yet they added a striking modern sacred space. This central space is a key feature of the current Lumen URC.
But the story doesn’t end there. The original church served a scattered congregation mostly Scots. They came to London seeking fortunes often finding themselves lost in the city’s temptations. The church was their refuge. It provided not only spiritual guidance but also social activities. A Young Man’s Bible Class flourished. It combined Christian teaching with cultural pursuits like a literary society and an orchestra. The class even had its own magazine The Thistle. The Thistle chronicles the lives of young men including Norman Bell a church deacon who fought and died in World War I. His letters reveal his faith and his longing for his church community.
The church also played a crucial role during World War II. It served as a refuge. It offered aid and comfort to those in need. The Regent Square Institute suffered damage. However the church itself miraculously escaped major damage until a V2 rocket struck the Presbyterian Church House in 1945. This caused considerable damage. The church was left unusable. This meant years of using temporary premises. Despite these obstacles the congregation persisted. They continued their work of worship and support for the community.
Today the Lumen United Reformed Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. It welcomes people of all faiths. Its history is woven into the fabric of London’s story.
