What whispers echo through Lumatapopo Cultural Village? Here, on this curving section of Guadalcanal’s coast, just west of Point Cruz, Lumatapopo breathes. The very name, a Ghari word, speaks of the southeast winds, the ‘ara’, meeting the land. Lumatapopo Cultural Village sits on land steeped in history, a history whispering through the rustling palms. Long before Honiara existed, this land belonged to the Ndi-Nggai. Their villages, Mataniko and Kakambona, thrived here. The land holds the echoes of complicated transactions. In 1886, traders Keely, Williams, and Woodhouse purchased the land, from Point Cruz to Tenaru, for a mere £60 of trade goods. Later, disputes arose, claims and counterclaims, echoing the shifting sands of ownership. Lumatapopo Cultural Village rests upon land that has witnessed the tumultuous birth of Honiara. During World War II, this very ground became a battleground. First, the Japanese arrived, then the Americans, their presence leaving an indelible mark on the landscape. The Americans established Camp Guadal, a bustling hub of activity, with its airfields and infrastructure. After the war, the British, recognizing the strategic importance of this location, moved their capital from the ravaged Tulagi to this very spot. The remnants of war, the echoes of conflict, are woven into the fabric of Lumatapopo. This land remembers. It remembers the Solomon Islanders who toiled in the Solomon Islands Labour Corps, working alongside the Americans, their efforts contributing to the transformation of this place. Lumatapopo Cultural Village stands as a testament to resilience, a tribute to the enduring spirit of the Solomon Islands. It stands as a vibrant cultural hub, a place where the stories of the past intertwine with the promise of the future.
