Is there a story whispered in the rustling palms surrounding Kukum SDA church? It seems so. The Kukum SDA church stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. It echoes with the voices of generations who found solace and community within its walls. The Seventh-day Adventist Church, whose presence graces this very spot, the Kukum SDA church, arrived on the shores of the Solomon Islands in 1914. Pastor Griffiths F. Jones and his wife, Marion, first set foot on Gizo Island. They carried with them a message of hope and a commitment to holistic well-being. Their arrival was facilitated by trader Norman Wheatley and encouraged by Resident Commissioner Woodford. The Kukum SDA church, and the broader Seventh-day Adventist movement, emphasizes a Saturday Sabbath. They also believe in the imminent second coming of Jesus Christ. These core tenets distinguish them from other denominations. Interestingly, the church also places significant importance on the connection between spiritual and physical health. This is evident in the medical work integrated into their missionary efforts. Kukum SDA church reflects this dedication to holistic well-being. The early days of the SDA church in the Solomon Islands were marked by remarkable growth. By 1918, just four years after their arrival, the first ten converts were baptized. This number quickly grew, with four hundred members attending Sabbath schools. The church’s influence expanded beyond the Western District, reaching Guadalcanal in 1926 thanks to the efforts of evangelist Jugha. He single-handedly established a mission there, laying the groundwork for the vibrant community that thrives at the Kukum SDA church today. Jugha’s dedication and tireless work paved the way for future growth. Within fourteen years of his arrival on Guadalcanal, there were approximately six hundred SDA converts. Kukum SDA church, standing here today, represents not just a place of worship, but a symbol of unwavering commitment. It is a legacy built by individuals like Pastor Jones, Marion Jones, and Evangelist Jugha, whose dedication brought the message of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to these islands.
