“Did they really replace the whole St Lukes Bridge?” a woman’s voice cuts through the air. Here we stand before Lukes Bridge, a vital artery over Auckland’s Northwestern Motorway. It’s not the original structure. You see, the old Lukes Bridge, burdened by time and traffic, was carefully deconstructed and removed, piece by piece, just a few years ago. A brand new bridge now stands in its place, immediately west of where its predecessor stood. The new Lukes Bridge efficiently carries the flow of vehicles, its construction completed at Easter with a swift traffic switchover. The dismantling of the old bridge was a meticulous process. An electric saw, equipped with a silencing blade to minimize disruption, sliced the structure into four manageable sections. These sections were then transported offsite by trucks, a nocturnal operation carried out under the cover of darkness. Each night, the motorway would be closed, allowing the work to proceed unimpeded. By 5 am, the road would be reopened, ready for the morning commute.
