Luisa Cuesta was born Maria Luisa Cuesta Vila. She was born in Soriano in 1920. Luisa died in Montevideo in 2018. She lived a long life. She became a human rights activist. But in 1976, Nebio was arrested in Buenos Aires. Then he disappeared. Luisa Cuesta then emigrated to the Netherlands. She stayed there with her family until 1985. Returning to Uruguay, Luisa led families of the disappeared. She organized the yearly March of Silence. Hundreds joined to remember those lost. Montevideo recognized her with the title Illustrious Citizen in 2012. The University of the Republic awarded her a Doctor Honoris Causa in 2013. These honors celebrated her fight for human rights. A civic center in Casavalle bears her name since 2015.

José Gallino created this mural of Luisa Cuesta. It is located in Plaza Luisa Cuesta. The plaza is at the intersection of Lima and Acuña de Figueroa streets. This location is one block from Avenida Libertador. The plaza’s creation came from a neighborhood proposal. It won the Presupuesto Participativo in 2016. The Municipio B invested significantly. They wanted to create a true dream plaza.
