The Lugar de encuentros, or “Meeting Place,” isn’t just a static form. It represents a space for dialogue and shared experiences, as envisioned by its creator, Eduardo Chillida. This Basque artist, known for his monumental works, saw his public sculptures not as mere objects, but as catalysts for interaction and community. Chillida designed the Lugar de encuentros series in the 1970s. This particular piece, Lugar de encuentros V, arrived in Palma on a fascinating journey. Initially acquired by Banca March in 1976, it graced their headquarters in the Avenidas. Decades later, in 1998, the bank generously donated the sculpture to the city of Palma. Chillida himself played a crucial role in selecting its final home. He chose the bustling Rambla dels Ducs de Palma de Mallorca, where the sculpture was finally installed in 1999, with the artist present to witness its placement. Sadly, Chillida passed away in 2002 at the age of 78, but his legacy lives on in the enduring presence of the Lugar de encuentros.
