“The Naked Lady of Niedersedlitz” they call her. That’s what the locals whisper about the “Blumenpflückerin” the Flower Picker statue in the park near Lugaer Strasse.

Welcome to Lugaer Strasse in Dresden’s Niedersedlitz district. This street isn’t just a road. It’s a living timeline weaving together the stories of Niedersedlitz and Grossluga. Before 1922 they were separate. Then Grossluga joined Niedersedlitz. The new housing developments around Niedersedlitzer Platz blossomed. Streets were named after flowers. Rosenweg and Nelkenstrasse for example.

Lugaer Strasse became the connector. Linking the old heart of Niedersedlitz with Luga. It stretched all the way to Dohnaer Strasse. Industry arrived too. By the 1930s number 108 was the highest house number. The street’s growth wasn’t steady. There was a building boom from 1992 to 1994 creating a new residential and retail area.

At number 12 stood the Filmschau Niedersedlitz. A cinema from around 1938. During the GDR era it was transformed into a swimming pool. Today it’s a construction site again.

Nearby Lungkwitzer Strasse runs parallel to the Lockwitzbach stream. The land between the two streets and the stream is a park. A roundel sits in the middle. There’s a story in the very centre. The “Blumenpflückerin” returned in 2012. Professor Otto Poertzel sculpted this kneeling female nude. It had stood here since 1938. It was moved to Hepkeplatz around 1950. The statue’s journey mirrors Lugaer Strasse’s own evolving history. A street of change and contrasts. A quiet residential street and a busy thoroughfare. A place of flowers and industry. A testament to the dynamic life of Dresden.

Today a modern apartment complex at numbers 3d and 3e stands as a symbol of recent development. Completed between 2019 and 2021 by Wohnen in Dresden GmbH & Co. KG. It offers 25 new homes.

Lugaer Strasse isn’t just a street. It’s a story. A story told in brick and stone in flowers and in the whispers of locals. It’s a story that continues to unfold.
