What if Lübeck Airport could whisper its story? It would tell tales of military beginnings and post-war aid. It would share stories of budget airlines and innovative technology. Lübeck Airport stands south of Lübeck. It is near Germany’s second-largest city in Schleswig-Holstein. The airport is also not far from Hamburg.

Originally, Lübeck Airport served as a secondary airport. It supported the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. Sometimes, it was even marketed as “Hamburg Lübeck”. Let’s dive into its past.

Construction began in 1916. By 1917, the airport operated as a military airfield. After World War I, it closed. The Luftwaffe reopened and expanded it in 1933. During the Berlin Blockade, the Royal Air Force played a crucial role. They flew coal to Berlin and refugees to West Germany using Douglas Dakota aircraft.

After German reunification, Lübeck Airport saw growth. Several airlines started flying here. The arrival terminal was reconstructed and extended in 1997. Ryanair began operations in 2000. They offered flights to London-Stansted. Wizz Air followed in 2006. They added flights to Gdańsk and other eastern European destinations.

Infratil, a New Zealand company, held a major share in Lübeck Airport. However, they sold their shares back to the City of Lübeck in 2009. Later, in 2013, the airport was sold to a private investor. The financial crisis and the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010 impacted passenger numbers.

A new ILS CAT II system became operational in 2014. This allowed planes to operate in more challenging weather. However, expansion plans faced lawsuits.

Bankruptcy hit Lübeck Airport in 2014. The owner had pulled out. The airport was sold to Chinese investor PuRen Germany GmbH. Ryanair left Lübeck. They cited the airport’s uncertain future. Wizz Air also ceased operations in 2016.

But the story doesn’t end there.

In 2020, Lübeck Airport announced plans for a virtual airline. Flights to Stuttgart and Munich were planned. An ATR 72-500 was purchased. Lübeck Air operated the flights.

In 2023, Lübeck Air announced changes. They sought jet operations with another airline. They focused on leisure destinations. Later, they suspended all flights for the winter season.

The airport is embracing innovation. Lübeck Airport uses technology to improve passenger experience. A modern check-in system streamlines operations. Ink’s departure control system has empowered Lübeck Airport staff. They can now focus on providing a positive experience for every traveler.

Looking ahead, Ryanair plans to return to Lübeck in 2025. They will offer flights to London, Málaga, and Palma de Mallorca. Lübeck Airport features a small terminal building. It includes check-in facilities, a shop, and restaurants. The apron has stands for mid-sized aircraft.

Lübeck Airport has a rich history. It has adapted to changing times. From military airfield to modern airport. It continues to evolve. As you stand here, you’re part of its ongoing story.
