Ludwig-Knoop-Statue

Gazing up at the Ludwig-Knoop-Statue, one might wonder about the man behind the bronze. This life-sized figure, a gift from the Waldemar-Koch-Stiftung, captures Ludwig Knoop not as a titan of industry, but as a “friendly older gentleman”. He stands here in Knoops Park, his bronze likeness dressed in a paletot, holding a walking stick and his melon-like hat. The Ludwig-Knoop-Statue was dedicated on October 28, 1995, a century after his death. It serves as a tribute to the man who, though born in Bremen, made his fortune in Russia. Knoop was a textile magnate, bringing the mechanized cotton industry to the Russian Empire. He partnered with Savva V. Morozov, establishing Russia’s first mechanized spinning mill. Knoop’s industrial prowess extended throughout Russia and even to Estonia, where his Narva factory housed and employed thousands. His success earned him the title of Baron, bestowed by Tsar Alexander II. Though his business empire stretched across continents, his heart remained in Bremen. He purchased the Mühlenthal estate in 1859. He transformed it into a grand residence surrounded by an English-style landscape park, designed by Wilhelm Benque, the same landscape architect behind Bremen’s Bürgerpark. After Knoop’s death, the estate passed to his eldest son, Johann. World War I and the Russian Revolution brought financial ruin, leading to the demolition of the Mühlenthal castle in 1933. However, Knoop’s legacy lives on. In 1936, the city acquired the land, preserving the park and renaming it Knoops Park, a fitting memorial to its founder. The Ludwig-Knoop-Statue, created by Bremen sculptor Claus Homfeld, stands as a reminder of Knoop’s contributions to industry and to Bremen.
