In 1927, a remarkable gift found its way to New Zealand, destined for a hero named Reginald Judson. This gift, an acorn from Windsor Castle, would grow into what we now know as Lt. R. S. Judson’s Oak Tree. Lt. R. S. Judson, a quiet man from Auckland, served with extraordinary bravery in World War I. He rarely spoke of his wartime experiences, keeping the horrors he witnessed locked within his heart. But his actions spoke volumes. In a mere few weeks in 1918, during the fighting in the Somme’s Bapaume region, Judson earned the Victoria Cross, the Distinguished Conduct Medal, and the Military Medal. His Victoria Cross, the highest military honor, was awarded for a series of daring raids on German trenches on August 26th. Lt. R. S. Judson’s Oak Tree, standing tall and proud, was planted by Judson himself in the 1920s. The tree is a symbol of remembrance for fallen comrades, a silent tribute to their sacrifice. The acorn, gifted by the Duke of York, later King George VI, further connects this tree to a lineage of respect and honor. Lt. R. S. Judson’s Oak Tree served as the focal point for what is believed to be the first Anzac Day remembrance service in Howick, cementing its place in local history. Judson’s legacy of bravery extends beyond this remarkable tree. His son, also named Reginald, followed in his father’s footsteps, serving in World War II and receiving the Military Cross for his bravery in Italy. Lt. R. S. Judson’s Oak Tree serves as a living testament to the courage and resilience of one man, and to the enduring power of remembrance. It stands as a tribute not only to Judson’s wartime contributions but also to his commitment to his community, a testament to his service on the Auckland City Council after the war.
