In 1980, Loyola College opened its doors to 134 eager students. Loyola College, nestled in Watsonia, Melbourne, began its journey on land with a rich history. This very ground once housed the Loyola Seminary, built between 1932 and 1934. The Jesuits, who established Loyola College, have a long-standing connection to this site. Their presence here dates back to 1934 when they established a house of formation and studies. This legacy continues to shape the college’s identity, fostering a commitment to education and service. Loyola College is a proud member of the Ignatian Network, connecting it to a global community of Jesuit and non-Jesuit schools. The college’s motto, “Justice, Mercy, Faith,” reflects the Ignatian values instilled in its students. These values guide them towards a life of Christian service, inspired by the teachings of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The college emblem further symbolizes its history and community. The five bars represent the five founding parishes: St Damian’s, Bundoora; Sacred Heart, Diamond Creek; St Mary’s, Greensborough; Our Lady of the Way, Kingsbury; and St Martin of Tours, Macleod. The two wolves eating from a cauldron, taken from the Loyola family crest in Spain, represent prosperity and hospitality. Loyola College is more than just an institution. It’s a thriving community where students are encouraged to discover and develop their God-given talents, not for personal gain, but for the betterment of the community. The college strives to create well-rounded individuals, fostering competence, conscience, and compassion. It cultivates a joy in learning, encouraging students to constantly strive for the “Magis,” or “more,” in their pursuit of knowledge and personal growth.
