Can you hear the rumble? It’s not thunder, but the collective hum of hundreds of buses at the Loyang Bus Depot. This isn’t just a parking lot. It’s the beating heart of several bus routes, a hive of activity where Go-Ahead Singapore orchestrates the movement of thousands of commuters daily. Loyang Bus Depot, completed in June 2015, stands as a testament to Singapore’s forward-thinking approach to public transport. This isn’t the first rodeo for a government-funded bus depot. Bulim Depot holds that title. But Loyang Bus Depot, nestled near the Loyang Industrial estate, plays a crucial role in the Bus Contracting Model. Go-Ahead Singapore, the current resident, won the tender for the Loyang Bus Package. This package encompasses the depot itself and a network of bus routes connecting Pasir Ris, Punggol, Changi Airport, and Changi Village. Loyang Bus Depot wasn’t always a Go-Ahead domain. Before the noise barriers went up, before the official opening ceremony in June 2016, the depot played host to SBS Transit and SMRT Buses. In early 2015, the freshly paved bus park served as a temporary home for SBS Transit’s new Mercedes-Benz Citaros. Later, SMRT Buses used the depot as an eastern base of operations. This arrangement lasted until 2018. Loyang Bus Depot is more than just a place for buses to rest. It’s a mini-city, equipped with everything needed for daily operations. It boasts facilities for maintenance and repair, plus amenities for the bus captains. There are rest areas, staff lounges, and even a canteen. The depot’s design, however, considered its proximity to residential areas. Hence, those noise barrier walls were erected along its perimeter. As part of the government’s push for electric buses, Loyang Bus Depot has also embraced the future. Charging stations, provided by Chinese electric power equipment supplier NARI, power the Yutong electric buses that now call Loyang home. The Loyang Bus Depot started with around 400 buses and has grown to accommodate approximately 500, reflecting the expanding needs of the community. As the buses roll out of Loyang Bus Depot each day, they carry with them not just passengers, but also a piece of Singapore’s ongoing commitment to efficient and accessible public transport.
