Have you ever thought about how one place can be shaped by two rivers? Lower Green Esher is located on the banks of the River Ember and the River Mole. These waterways have been integral to the area’s history and development. The Royal Mills, once situated on the banks of the River Mole, were a hub of industrial activity, producing everything from corn to copper wire. Imagine these mills standing tall, their water wheels churning, and the air filled with the sounds of industry. Over time, the mills witnessed a fascinating transformation, becoming a paper mill then a linoleum factory before sadly being destroyed by fire in 1897. But the story doesn’t end there. In 1902, the mill was rebuilt by the bookbinders James Burn & Co Ltd, solidifying Lower Green’s strong ties to printing and binding. Later, the mill was used by Vickers for aircraft parts production during the war. During the 1950s, housing began to rise in Lower Green, expanding outwards from the Royal Mills. Today, Lower Green is a vibrant residential and commercial area with a rich past and a thriving present, and it’s all thanks to the River Mole and the River Ember.
