Lost in a world of city streets lies a place called Lotissement les Micocouliers. It is a name that might not echo through history books. Yet it holds stories of community, change, and resilience in Marseille.

Let’s walk around this area. Lotissement les Micocouliers is located in the 13010 district of Marseille. An apartment here could cost around 181,000 euros.

Once upon a time, the Cité des Micocouliers was a place of joy. It was known for its fraternity and mixité. But times changed. The arrival of drug resale networks brought terror. Residents witnessed countless shootings. The sense of security was shattered.

But the people of Micocouliers decided to fight back. They decided to reverse their destiny. United, the inhabitants worked to close off one of the two entrances to the city. This was done to prevent it from becoming a dangerous highway for scooters. Sabrina, a long-time resident, recalls how unsafe it was. She said scooters sped through the streets.

The residents also campaigned for a wall to protect the school. Simple fences were not enough. Their voices were heard and a wall was built. Samir, another resident, is excited about the future. He looks forward to a city stadium that is scheduled to open in January.

These collective actions motivated the residents. They formed an association. Since then, the group has been organizing regular activities for children. Samir, the president of the association says they are doing it with their own money. But they hope for support. He dreams of giving the children more opportunities.

Nathalie Traimond expressed her joy when the bouncy castle arrived. Dozens of kids left the cotton candy line to be first. Sabrina states that these children only leave to go to school. As parents, they are obliged to confine them. She remembers last summer when some of them witnessed a shooting. She is horrified. She is committed to bringing smiles back to their faces.

Dunes, along with the residents’ association and the Saint-Joseph Fontainieu social center organized a large party. Nathalie Traimond stated that they proposed an action. The partners of the Politique de la Ville immediately jumped on board. It was crucial for them to do something here.

Fatiha, Farida, and Faiza grew up here. Fatiha is the only one still living in Les Micocouliers. She recalls a wonderful childhood with picnics in green spaces. They swam in a pond. There was not much money but those times were blessed.

Faiza says that mixité was ended on purpose. Then came the networks that terrorized people. They kept people apart. Now they have reunited once more.

So as you stand before Lotissement les Micocouliers. Remember the power of unity. Remember the strength of a community. And above all remember the resilience of the human spirit.
