Lost in the urban sprawl of Leipzig, Lößeßig whispers tales of resilience and transformation. Lößeßig, a name echoing its forested origins, began as a humble Sorbian settlement nestled along the banks of the Pleiße River. Imagine a time, as early as the 7th century, when this area was a dense woodland, chosen by the Sorbs as their home. This wasn’t just a village; historical records from 1040 reveal a “burgwardo Lesnic,” a fortified settlement, possibly a water fortress, standing alongside the Sorbian village, marking Lößeßig’s strategic importance. Over the centuries, Lößeßig evolved, embracing German and Flemish settlers who arrived during the German eastward expansion. This fusion of cultures shaped Lößeßig’s identity. Around the 13th century, Lößeßig, along with the neighboring villages of Dölitz and Connewitz, demonstrated their ingenuity by creating the Dölitz-Connewitz mill ditch. This innovative solution brought water to their mills when deforestation threatened their livelihoods. Lößeßig’s story is also one of faith. The village church, gaining its first bell in 1442, served as a landmark, separating the settlement from the emerging Rittergut, or manor estate. The church’s history took intriguing turns, becoming a subsidiary of Güldengossa in 1638 and later of Markkleeberg in 1691, before finally regaining its independence in 1900. The transformation of the Rittergut also shaped Lößeßig. From the von Pflugk family in the 14th century to the Blasebalgs and then the Kees family, the estate played a crucial role in the community. Lößeßig officially became part of Leipzig in 1891. This period of rapid growth saw the birth of Gartenstadt Alt-Lößeßig, a “garden city” designed by Max Pommer and Anton Käppler. This innovative project, built between 1902 and 1913, provided much-needed affordable housing in a time of growing demand. The distinctive Rundling, built in 1929-1930, further showcases Lößeßig’s architectural innovation. This circular housing development, with its three concentric rings, drew attention far beyond Leipzig’s borders. Today, as you stand in Lößeßig, you see a blend of old and new. The Rundling, carefully restored after wartime damage, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this community. Lößeßig invites you to explore its rich history, from its Sorbian roots to its garden city ideals, a testament to a neighborhood that has continually adapted and thrived through the ages.
