Nestled along the Elbe River, Loschwitz/Wachwitz whispers tales of wine, artistry, and nobility. Loschwitz/Wachwitz became a part of Dresden in 1921. But its story begins much earlier. Imagine the 11th century. Loschwitz was a tranquil wine-growing village. The earliest record mentioning Loschwitz dates back to 1227. The document transfers Loschwitz and nearby Reppnitz to the Meissen Cathedral chapter. Fast forward to the 17th century. Elector John George II of Saxony recognized the beauty of these slopes. He established vineyards that would transform Loschwitz/Wachwitz. The area quickly became a fashionable retreat for Dresden’s elite. Composers like Heinrich Schütz and goldsmiths like Johann Melchior Dinglinger built their summer homes amongst the vines. Even the great poet Friedrich Schiller found inspiration here. In 1785, he penned the “Ode to Joy” while visiting Christian Gottfried Körner’s cottage in the Loschwitz vineyards. The 19th century brought a new era of grandeur. James Ogilvy, the 7th Earl of Findlater, purchased vast estates in Loschwitz/Wachwitz. These estates became the sites of magnificent Elbe Castles, including Albrechtsberg Palace and Eckberg Castle. As Loschwitz/Wachwitz flourished, so did its need for connection. The iconic “Blue Wonder” bridge, built between 1891 and 1893, linked Loschwitz with Blasewitz across the Elbe. This marvel of engineering further solidified Loschwitz/Wachwitz’s place as a prestigious destination. And what about getting around within Loschwitz/Wachwitz itself? The steep slopes presented a challenge. This led to the creation of the Dresden Funicular Railway in 1895 and the Dresden Suspension Railway in 1901. These historic modes of transportation still carry passengers today, offering stunning views of the Elbe Valley. Loschwitz/Wachwitz wasn’t just a place for summer retreats; it became a vibrant community. Notable figures like Manfred von Ardenne, a renowned inventor, and Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus, made their homes here. The spirit of innovation and history intertwines within the streets of Loschwitz/Wachwitz. Today, as you stroll through Loschwitz/Wachwitz, remnants of its rich past surround you. From the vineyards that first drew the nobility to the grand castles and innovative transportation, Loschwitz/Wachwitz stands as a testament to its enduring charm. The whispers of history are alive here, waiting to be discovered.
