“A tranquil open space!” Those were my exact thoughts when I first stumbled upon this hidden gem called Loris Community Garden. It is a testament to community spirit and nature’s resilience.

Loris Community Garden in Hammersmith and Fulham spans a modest 0.09 hectares. This garden offers a green escape for locals and visitors alike. It stands as a testament to what a community can achieve together.

This garden has an interesting origin. It was created in 1983 on a former World War II bombsite. Part of Loris Road was closed to traffic. This has created a peaceful haven on both sides of the street. It is a place where nature thrives.

The Hammersmith Community Gardens Association manages this space. They oversee both Loris Community Garden and Godolphin. They also manage the glasshouses in Ravenscourt Park and Phoenix School Farm. Their work extends into neighboring boroughs. They offer environmental education in schools. They also guide groups in making their spaces eco-friendly. They provide expert growing advice.

The pond is Loris Community Garden’s focal point. A rich variety of wetland plants surrounds it. White water-lilies float serenely on the surface. Marsh marigold, yellow iris, and water mint fringe the shore. Frogs breed here and countless insects call it home.

Nearby, a tiny plot of native trees and shrubs provides shelter for birds. Alder, willow, and birch create a natural canopy. Wildflowers thrive here. Canadian golden-rod, wild carrot, and broad-leaved everlasting pea add color. Some ‘cornfield annual’ seed mixes have been introduced.

Loris Community Garden also features a more formal area. Flowerbeds and shrubs add structure and beauty. It exemplifies successful community cooperation.

Visiting Loris Community Garden is an experience. You can wander through the tranquil paths. Listen to the gentle sounds of nature. Watch frogs spawning in the pond. Discover the diverse plant life. You can appreciate the hard work of the community. Loris Community Garden offers a peaceful escape. It is a place where nature and community intertwine. Take a moment to appreciate this local treasure.
