It’s a fitting tribute to the larger-than-life figure of Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scout movement. The Lord Baden Powell Statue captures him in his later years, dressed in his Scouting uniform, complete with his signature campaign hat tucked behind his arm.
The sculptor, Don Potter, knew Baden-Powell personally and chose to depict him in Cornish granite. This choice was quite unique, as granite was a difficult material to work with and this became the only granite statue in London at the time of its unveiling in 1961. Notice the details: his Bronze Wolf medal, the highest honor in Scouting, and his walking stick, a symbol of his love for the outdoors.
