Built in 1882 this isn’t just any adobe. This is the Lopez Adobe. Standing proudly at 1100 Pico Street in San Fernando it’s one of the oldest private residences in the entire San Fernando Valley. Imagine the Lopez family bustling within these walls.

Geronimo Lopez a Mexican army messenger during the Mexican-American War. His wife Catalina the daughter of the San Fernando Mission’s second mayordomo. Together they built a life here. Their story is woven into the very bricks of this Lopez Adobe. They established the valley’s first general store its first English language school and its very first post office. This adobe wasn’t just a home it was the heart of a community.

The original Lopez Station a stagecoach stop on the road between Los Angeles and San Francisco stood nearby. Sadly it was lost to the construction of the San Fernando Reservoir. But the Lopez Adobe endured. It survived earthquakes and the passage of time. A testament to the strength and resilience of both the structure and the family who built it.

This magnificent two-story adobe a blend of Monterey and Victorian styles. Catalina herself designed the Victorian features. The hand-cut wooden railings and the turquoise blue paint are exquisite details. Can you picture the first local newspaper the San Fernando Times being printed right here inside the Lopez Adobe in 1889?

The Lopez family lived here until 1961. Their legacy lives on in this beautifully preserved home. In 1971 the city of San Fernando purchased the Lopez Adobe. They recognized its historical significance its cultural importance. Today you can visit this landmark a window to the past. A reminder of the rich history of the San Fernando Valley. The Lopez Adobe stands as a symbol of perseverance a treasure to be cherished. It remains a vital part of the San Fernando story.
