From high atop Maungawhau / Mt Eden, the city of Auckland sprawls before you like a giant, glittering map. Maungawhau, meaning “mountain of the whau tree,” isn’t just a lookout. It’s a powerful, ancient place steeped in history. Once a bustling Māori pā, or fortified settlement, the slopes of Maungawhau bear the scars and whispers of generations past. Imagine the scene 28,000 years ago. Two volcanic eruptions ripped through the earth, creating the overlapping scoria cones that form this majestic peak. Over time, Māori people carved terraces into the land, building homes and defensive structures. These terraces tell a story of ingenuity and resilience, a testament to a people deeply connected to the land. Today, the remnants of these terraces offer a glimpse into a vanished world. As you stand here, on the tihi (summit), try to picture the bustling activity of the pā. Imagine the sights, sounds, and smells of daily life, the strategic importance of this towering vantage point. Look down into the crater, a sacred space. Remember it must not be entered, a sign of respect for its spiritual significance. Over one million visitors come to Maungawhau each year, drawn by the panoramic views of the city and the Waitematā Harbour. The paths are stony and steep in places. Make sure to stick to the formed walkways. Look across the city. See Rangitoto Island rising from the sea, a reminder of Auckland’s volcanic past. Maungawhau / Mt Eden stands as a silent sentinel, bearing witness to the passage of time, the growth of a city, and the enduring spirit of a people.
