A sailor’s gaze. That’s what the Lone Sailor Monument captures. Standing proudly at Vista Point on the Marin County side of the Golden Gate Bridge this statue is more than just bronze and granite. It’s a poignant tribute. A tribute to every sailor who ever sailed out the Golden Gate in service of their country.

The Lone Sailor is a replica. A replica of the U S Navy Memorial statue in Washington D C. It represents a sailor’s last view of the West Coast. He’s sailing out for duty at sea. The statue’s powerful pose is a symbol of dedication and sacrifice. Created by Stanley Bleifield this masterpiece is a must-see.

But there’s more to the Lone Sailor than meets the eye. The statue was modeled on Petty Officer 1st Class Dan Maloney. The surrounding circular deck is a work of art in itself. Designed by San Francisco landscape architect Fred Warnecke it features Sonoma fieldstone and ship’s lanterns. Below the Lone Sailor’s feet is a compass rose. Its quadrants marked in different shades of granite from an Italian quarry.

The $2 million project was entirely funded by private donations. Cal Trans maintains the area. The area is also part of the National Park Service. Notice the bronze relief sculptures surrounding the sailor. They honor the Navy Marine Corps Coast Guard and Merchant Marine.

Carl Nolte’s words perfectly capture the essence of this memorial. He wrote “Here the sailor feels the first long roll of the sea the beginning of the endless horizon that leads to the far Pacific”. Thousands of American seafarers have sailed past this spot. Many never returned. The Lone Sailor stands as a testament to their service and sacrifice. It’s a moving experience to stand here and reflect on their journeys. This monument is dedicated to the ordinary sailors and Marines who sailed from this place and did their duty. Remember their courage. Remember their stories.
