Did you know that London Welsh RFC was born in a Fleet Street pub in 1885? Imagine Welshmen in London yearning for a piece of home. London Welsh RFC emerged as their sanctuary.

The London Welsh Rugby Football Club. Its Welsh name is Clwb Rygbi Cymry Llundain. It was more than just a club. It was a symbol of Welsh identity in London. From its humble beginnings, London Welsh RFC rose to prominence.

Initially, the club grappled with financial instability and lacked a permanent home. Its very existence was threatened and it disbanded in 1894. Yet, the spirit of London Welsh RFC was resilient. It was reborn just a year later in 1895.

Enter Willie Llewellyn. He was the captain of Wales in 1905. He was also a student in London. Llewellyn proposed that the Welsh Rugby Union only select Welsh players in London. This was only if they played for London Welsh. This clever move attracted top talent. Players like Teddy Morgan and Arthur Harding joined. Support and finances soared.

The club moved around a lot. It finally settled at Old Deer Park in 1957. This marked an era of great success for London Welsh RFC.

The golden years of London Welsh RFC are remembered from 1966 to 1973. John Dawes captained a team of legends. JPR Williams and Mervyn Davies were among them. Their open and attacking style of play captivated fans. In 1971 seven London Welsh players were selected for the British Lions tour. This record remains unbroken.

London Welsh RFC faced challenges with professionalism. The club went into administration in 2009. But it was rescued and continued in the Championship. It even reached the Premiership twice in 2012 and 2014.

Financial troubles resurfaced. In 2016, the club faced liquidation. London Welsh RFC was removed from the RFU Championship in 2017. Its professional structure dissolved.

Yet, the spirit of London Welsh RFC lives on through its amateur setup. The club has a storied history. It boasts numerous honors including the RFU Championship titles. It also won the British and Irish Cup. Many London Welsh players have achieved international acclaim. They include British and Irish Lions like John Dawes.
