“Did you know this cultural gem started as a student theatre group?” The Lona Cultural Elza Osborne stands before you a testament to Rio’s vibrant artistic spirit. In 1952 a group of students from the Colegio Belisario dos Santos formed the Teatro Rural do Estudante. Their passion for theatre ignited a cultural flame in Campo Grande. Elza Pinho Osborne a prominent engineer and dramaturge supported them. She even gifted them their first theatre a true arena for their talents. This became the Teatro de Arena Elza Osborne.

The theatre thrived for years hosting countless performances. However the lack of a roof hampered its operations during rainy seasons. In the 1980s a campaign “Cubra o Arena e descubra nossa Arte” was launched. This aimed to secure a roof for the theatre. Luckily the solution came unexpectedly. Following the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio discarded canvas tents remained.

Ives Macena the administrator cleverly secured these tents. He transformed the Teatro de Arena into the Lona Cultural Elza Osborne. This ingenious reuse of materials marked a new era for this special place. The first Lona Cultural in Rio was born. The Lona Cultural Elza Osborne opened in 1993. It became a model for other similar cultural spaces across the city. The initiative received recognition including a UNESCO commendation.

Today the Lona Cultural Elza Osborne stands proudly. It continues to be a vibrant hub of artistic expression and community engagement. It showcases a diverse range of cultural activities theatre music visual arts and more. It boasts a capacity of 400 people and is managed by the UGAT-ZO a union of theatre groups from Rio’s West Zone. This is a place where the past meets the present a place where Rio’s cultural soul truly shines. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018 the Lona hosted a month of cultural events featuring both established and emerging artists. This celebration demonstrated its lasting impact on Campo Grande and Rio de Janeiro. The legacy of Elza Osborne and the Teatro Rural do Estudante lives on. It thrives within the walls of this remarkable cultural centre.
