Gliding along the tracks toward a storied past prepare to be amazed by the Lokschuppen. This is not just a building. It is a living testament to Dresden’s rich railway history. The Eisenbahnmuseum Dresden resides here in the oldest yet newest structure of the former Dresden-Altstadt steam locomotive depot.
Let’s jump back to 1872. The depot’s story began with a modest locomotive heating building for twenty locomotives. A coal shed was also built along Nossener Straße. This Lokschuppen was the humble start of something big.
By the turn of the century three more Lokschuppens emerged showcasing Dresden’s booming railway industry. In 1884 a significant three-story extension was added to heating building one. It included a water reservoir and social spaces. This early example of railway architecture is now a vital part of the Eisenbahnmuseum.
Imagine the scene. Workers used fixed Ruge cranes to load coal. One of these cranes survives today within the Eisenbahnmuseum. It is a testament to the ingenuity of early railway operations.
After the devastations of April 1945 heating building one was rebuilt in 1953. This museum Lokschuppen became the newest building in the steam locomotive depot.
The Eisenbahnmuseum Dresden was founded in 2002. It became the home for historic Deutsche Bahn AG vehicles. Since October 2005 the Interessengemeinschaft Bw Dresden Altstadt e. V. has managed the museum. They keep the spirit of railway history alive.

But what about the heart of this place. The Dampfloktreffen or Steam Locomotive Meeting transforms the Lokschuppen into a vibrant hub.
Picture this. Special trains arrive from all over Germany and neighboring countries. Their locomotives breathe life into the historic Dresden-Altstadt depot. The Dampfloktreffen is a family event. It offers bouncy castles children’s crafts and a market. Night photography parades at the turntable and live music nights add to the excitement.
The Dampfloktreffen occurs at the former Dresden-Altstadt depot. This includes the ring Lokschuppen House 1 near the Nossener Brücke. It also uses the Dresden Transport Museum depot at the corner of Zwickauer Straße and Würzburger Straße.
