“What purpose does this towering structure serve?” a curious traveler once asked about Lokal ng Bagong Ilog. This is the Lokal ng Bagong Ilog. It stands as a testament to faith and community in this vibrant part of Manila.
Bagong Ilog and Sumilang were once one. In the 17th century they formed a vast sandy plain called Aplaya. Aplaya thrived as a hub. Farmers grew fresh vegetables, sugarcane, corn and more. Traders came from neighboring villages. Even the Governor-General journeyed here by boat from Malacañang.
Locals avoided living in Aplaya. They preferred higher ground to escape annual floods from San Mateo and Montalban mountains. In 1745 disaster struck. A massive flood devastated livestock and crops. Lives were lost and people fled to Dilain. This is now Pasig Boulevard and Kawilihan Village.
The flood receded leaving a long waterway. It cut through Aplaya creating two separate lands. Over time the new land became Sumilang. It was named for its emergence in the east. The old land with the waterway became Bagong Ilog.
The story of Bagong Ilog took a colorful turn. The miraculous discovery of the image of Sta. Rosa de Lima added to its history. Ubaldo Intalan from Bagong Ilog and Celestino Cruz from Sumilang were close friends. They decided to visit a lady in Buwayang Bato Mandaluyong. They avoided Doña Geronima’s cave believing it was enchanted.
Reaching their destination they were warmly received. On their return Ubaldo was filled with hope for love. The friends decided to gather wood in Tangos. They still avoided Doña Geronima’s cave due to its mysteries. Some believed Maria Makiling and Doña Geronima were the same. After gathering wood they smelled dama de noche flowers. They were surprised because the fragrance is only released at night.
Searching they found the scent came from a large cacao tree. A beautiful image was revealed. Light seemed to emanate from a carbuncle stone. Light also came from countless fireflies within the tree. The friends were drawn to the Virgin’s beautiful image. They lifted the image revealing green robes and white bombyx mori clothing.
The friends took the image to Bagong Ilog. People from Sumilang came to see it. Examination revealed it was Sta. Rosa de Lima. This miraculous finding gave Bagong Ilog and Sumilang a shared history. Over the years the feast of Sta. Rosa de Lima became a vibrant celebration. It symbolizes unity in Christ under her guidance.
Bagong Ilog was a village of 45 hectares. It had 4000 residents who were mostly farmers and launderers. As Pasig grew businesses developed. Some residents worked for the government. Others had small businesses like tailoring shops, stores and poultry farms. These provided livelihoods and contributed to the village’s progress.
Challenges were inevitable. But unity helped residents face unexpected difficulties. They supported each other in times of hardship. Their cooperation showed a commitment to helping others and staying united.
Today Lokal ng Bagong Ilog stands as a reminder. It is a reminder of the area’s rich past. It is a vibrant community. It is a place where faith and unity continue to shape the lives of its people.
