The Lohbergtunnel is more than just a hole in the ground. Its story begins with ambitious plans to modernize rail travel in Germany. The goal was a faster route between major cities. This required innovative solutions to overcome geographical obstacles.
Originally planned to be 563 meters long, the Lohbergtunnel eventually stretched to 1,072 meters. This expansion incorporated the Kahnwiese intersection structure. This structure was built using an open-frame construction method. It became an integral part of the tunnel.
Construction began in October 1984. The project cost 18.1 million D-Mark. Workers used different techniques to build the tunnel. About 352 meters were created using the New Austrian Tunneling Method. A key feature of the Lohbergtunnel is the Kahnwiese intersection structure. Construction on this began in April 1985. This structure is 950 meters long. It includes a closed frame section with 55 blocks. It also has a U-shaped trough structure with 53 blocks.
Building the Kahnwiese intersection was challenging. Workers encountered poor soil conditions. This included clayey silts and layers of gypsum and brown coal. To stabilize the structure, they installed 760 large cast-in-place concrete piles. These piles totaled 8,343 meters in length.
During construction, workers rerouted existing tracks. They built two pedestrian bridges and a utility duct under the trough. Heid & Franke from Munich was the main contractor. The German Federal Railroad’s NBS project group oversaw the project.
The Lohbergtunnel officially opened in 1991. It opened with the Kassel-Fulda section of the high-speed line. Today, trains pass through the Lohbergtunnel. They travel at speeds of up to 160 km/h in some sections and 140 km/h in others.
