Consider for a moment what it means to belong. Here at the Logenhaus in Kassel, that sense of belonging has echoed through its halls for many years. The Logenhaus at Friedrichstraße 23 is home to the Johannisloge “Zur Freundschaft”.
Freemasonry is about working on oneself. It is about freedom. It is about tolerance. Dogmas have no place here. The Loge welcomes men from all parts of society. The Logenhaus is a place where they can unite. Every free man of good reputation is welcome. That is according to an old saying.
The Johannisloge “Zur Freundschaft” celebrated its 125th anniversary. The website was recently updated. This was done with the current data protection regulation in mind. Humanism and enlightenment have a long tradition in Kassel. This tradition has occurred with and without royal support. That is a short summary of Kassel’s Loge history.

The Sparrenburg Loge of Mark Master Masons No. 1575 also meets in Kassel. It was founded in 1981. It is under the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of England and Wales. The rituals are held in German.
The Grand Landlodge of the Freemasons of Germany is a Masonic Grand Lodge. It was founded in 1770. Johann Wilhelm Kellner von Zinnendorf established it. He was a Prussian Army physician. The Grand Landlodge works according to the Swedish Rite. It differs from other German Grand Lodges.
The Order of Freemasons wants its members to develop their personalities. They should strive for rationality. They should strive for conscience. Inner freedom and self-knowledge are important. People must be aware of their responsibilities. This helps them find the origin of mankind.
The Grand Landlodge is divided into three branches. There is the St. John’s Lodge. It works with the regular three Masonic degrees. There is the St. Andrew’s Lodge. It works with the IVth to VIth degree. The Chapter works with the VIIth to Xth degree.
The institutions of the Order of Freemasons include the Research Lodge Frederik. It is based in Flensburg/Husum. There is the Freemasonry Museum in St. Michaelisdonn. The Zinnendorf Foundation is in Hamburg-Eppendorf. The Zirkelkorrespondenz is the Order’s journal. It was founded in 1872.
The headquarters of the Order are in Berlin-Dahlem. The old headquarters were destroyed in World War II. The Order is led by the Master of the Order and the Grand Master of the Land. The Grand Master of the Land leads the Great Landlodge.
The Grand Landlodge’s St. John’s lodges are like the blue lodges of other Grand Lodges. In 1934, the Grand Landlodge had around 20,000 members in 178 lodges.
The Provincial Lodges mediate between the St. John’s and St. Andrew’s lodges and the Grand Master of the Land.
During the 18th century, around 70% of German Masonic Lodges used the Strict Observance rituals. Johann Wilhelm Kellner von Zinnendorf wrote to the Grand Lodge in London. He asked for a patent to start a new Lodge.
In 1773, the Grand Landlodge was recognized by the Grand Lodge in London. Frederick the Great gave the Grand Landlodge his royal protection in 1774.
In 1933, the GLL removed all parts of the ritual that drew on the Old Testament. It got rid of all Masonic names. It was renamed “German-Christian Order of the Knights Templar”.
On July 14, 1935, the Grand Landlodge held a final ceremony. After World War II, the Grand Landlodge was re-established. Dr. Hans Oehmen was elected the first Master of the Order.
