Have you ever heard of a ghost epidemic? Right here in London, the Lockwood Building at 35 Portland Row isn’t just any university building. It’s the fictional headquarters of Lockwood & Co., a paranormal investigation agency from the Netflix series. This series, based on the books by Jonathan Stroud, imagines a London plagued by “The Problem,” a 50-year-long ghost epidemic. Lockwood & Co., led by the charismatic Anthony Lockwood, takes on cases involving these dangerous spectral visitors. The building itself, while not actually 35 Portland Row, is brought to life on screen through clever filming at 33 Claremont Square in Islington. While you can’t go inside the real house, as it’s a private residence, walking around Claremont Square gives you a sense of the series’ atmosphere. Interestingly, this square also served as the filming location for Grimmauld Place in the Harry Potter films. So, while Lockwood Building exists in the fictional world, its presence is felt in the real London locations used to bring the story to life.
