In 1563, a grand vision began to take shape on the island of Šipan. This vision belonged to Vice Stjepović-Skočibuha, Dubrovnik’s renowned shipbuilder. He desired a summer residence, a sanctuary where he could escape the city’s bustle. This sanctuary would become the magnificent Ljetnikovac Vice Stjepovića-Skočibuha. Ljetnikovac Vice Stjepovića-Skočibuha stands as a testament to the grandeur of 16th-century Dubrovnik. It’s a unique blend of residential comfort and defensive fortifications. The construction, lasting from May to December 1563, was a feat of engineering. Materials were sourced from near and far. Stone arrived from Korčula and Kupari, transported under the watchful eye of the bricklayer, Ivan Antunović. Skilled builders like Tonko Rusković, familiar with Stjepović’s projects, and Stijepo Đivaljević from Gruž, lent their expertise. The Ljetnikovac Vice Stjepovića-Skočibuha wasn’t just a summer home. It was a complex designed for both leisure and protection. The main building, a single-story stone structure, housed the family. A smaller dwelling accommodated the family’s monk. A chapel, dedicated to St. Thomas in memory of Vice’s father, offered spiritual solace. Two three-story towers, built as a defense against pirate raids, stood sentinel over the estate. Ljetnikovac Vice Stjepovića-Skočibuha boasted both front and back gardens. A rectangular promenade offered a place for leisurely strolls. A loggia provided shade and stunning views. A mill and cisterns catered to the household’s needs. The interiors of Ljetnikovac Vice Stjepovića-Skočibuha are equally impressive. A rare Renaissance fireplace with preserved stucco hood decoration graces the main hall. An elegant stone sink with embossed edges adds a touch of refinement. A unique wooden balcony, known as a “balatur,” overlooks the staircase. It’s a rare survivor from the 16th century. Ljetnikovac Vice Stjepovića-Skočibuha is a unique gem. It’s the only fully preserved summer residence of its kind in Croatia. It embodies the elegance and practicality of Dubrovnik’s country architecture. In the 2000s, Ljetnikovac Vice Stjepovića-Skočibuha served as a museum, showcasing its rich history. It even received the “Plavi Cvijet” award in 2003, recognizing its unique contribution to Croatian tourism. This meticulously preserved monument offers a glimpse into the life of a prominent Dubrovnik family. It’s a place where history comes alive.
