It seemed their faith had indeed brought them a long way from their humble beginnings on Johnstown Road. Little Zion Baptist Church, established in 1883 by a group of devoted Christians, had become a beacon of hope and resilience. The church, originally named Zion Chapel Baptist Church, sought a permanent home after years of renting. Guided by faith, the founders, including figures like Deacon Jesse Saunders and William Brooks, acquired the current site on December 29, 1886. The church’s name changed to reflect the burgeoning community it served. The legacy of these founders is palpable in every brick and hymn sung within the church walls. Each subsequent generation contributed to Little Zion Baptist Church’s growth, embodying the spirit of dedication and progress. The church saw the installation of stained glass windows and a sidewalk, tangible symbols of its evolving story.
