“Did you ever hear of an island twice the size of its neighbor, yet almost entirely unknown?” I ask, gesturing towards the south. “That, my friends, is Little Tybee Island.” Just a short boat ride from Tybee Island, Little Tybee is a world apart. A pristine, undeveloped wilderness of over 6,500 acres, it’s a stark contrast to the lively beaches we’ve just left. Little Tybee Island is a nature preserve, accessible only by private boat, kayak, or paddleboard. There are no roads, no bridges, no buildings—just miles of unspoiled salt marsh, tidal creeks, and beaches fringed by dunes. The island, owned by the State of Georgia and partially managed by the Nature Conservancy, is a haven for wildlife. Birdwatchers flock here (pun intended) to spot species like the bald eagle, osprey, egret, heron, and wood stork. The surrounding waters teem with fish, making it a popular spot for anglers. You can explore the island on a guided kayak tour, paddling through the creeks and rivers, or land on the beach for some exploration. Little Tybee Island even offers primitive camping. Imagine falling asleep under a sky ablaze with stars, lulled by the gentle rhythm of the waves. But be prepared. There are no facilities on the island. Everything you need must be brought with you, and all trash must be packed out. A word of caution: while tempting, don’t try to walk or swim to Little Tybee Island from Tybee’s South Beach at low tide. A sandbar stretches much of the way, but rapidly rising tides and strong currents make the crossing extremely dangerous. People have lost their lives attempting it. Stick to boats or kayaks, and you’ll have a safe and unforgettable experience on Little Tybee Island, a true hidden gem of the Georgia coast.
