Can the stones themselves whisper tales of Little Stanmore? Here, in what is now Canons Park, within the London Borough of Harrow, lies the story of a parish lost and a grand estate remembered. Little Stanmore, once a distinct entity, now weaves its history into the fabric of Edgware and Stanmore. Its very name, a counterpoint to Great Stanmore, hints at a smaller, perhaps less prominent, yet equally fascinating past. Originally encompassing the western part of Edgware, Little Stanmore’s identity blurred over time, absorbed by Harrow. The name “Stanmore” itself speaks of a “pond made of stone,” a feature perhaps lost to the ages, but echoed in the area’s historical significance. An ancient parish in the Gore hundred of Middlesex, Little Stanmore was more than just a geographical designation. It was a community, bound by shared responsibilities for the poor and sanitary provisions within the Hendon Poor Law Union. This community life evolved, becoming part of the Hendon Rural District and ultimately, absorbed into the Harrow Urban District in 1934. Its population blossomed during this period, growing from a modest 1,069 in 1901 to nearly seven times that number by 1931. At the heart of Little Stanmore stands St. Lawrence’s Church, a testament to the area’s rich history. Reconstructed in the baroque style by the Duke of Chandos, the church bears the artistic touch of John James and possibly James Gibbs. Within its walls, the echoes of Handel’s organ still resonate, a reminder of the musical genius who graced the church and whose legacy intertwined with Little Stanmore. The churchyard holds its own stories. Here lies William Powell, the supposed inspiration for Handel’s “Harmonious Blacksmith,” and Long John Baldry, the blues singer whose voice once filled concert halls. Little Stanmore’s story isn’t just one of boundaries and demographics. It is a narrative of transformation, of a small parish overshadowed by its grand neighbor, Canons, yet leaving an indelible mark on the landscape and history of the area. As you stand here, in the tranquility of Canons Park, listen closely. Perhaps the stones themselves whisper the forgotten tales of Little Stanmore.
