Little Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church

In 1957, a beacon of faith was ignited on Chicago’s West Side. The Little Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church, under the fervent leadership of Reverend Dr. Amos Waller, began its journey. Initially nestled in a modest space at 3657 West Roosevelt Road, the church’s first service resonated with the soulful harmonies of the Kindly Shepards quartet. Following Reverend Waller’s powerful sermon, ten souls joined the nascent congregation, breathing life into the Little Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church. The church’s name, a testament to faith and divine grace, was suggested by Sister Bernice Walker, one of the founding members. Growth marked the early years of the Little Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church. By 1960, the congregation had outgrown its original home and relocated to 3906 West Roosevelt Road. Despite facing challenges, the church thrived under Reverend Waller’s unwavering belief in God’s power and his inspiring motto, “You Can Make It, If You Try.” Reverend Waller’s prayers were answered when, in 1964, the Little Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church acquired a former movie theater at 4015 West Roosevelt Road. This once-abandoned space was transformed into a magnificent church, a testament to the growing congregation and their shared faith. The Little Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church opened its doors to preachers from all walks of life, welcoming both young and seasoned ministers. Notable figures like Reverend Jasper Williams, Reverend Clay Evans, and even Vice President Walter Mondale graced the church with their presence. After Reverend Waller’s passing in 1998, the Little Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church embarked on a search for new spiritual leadership. Reverend T.C. Raven briefly held the pastorate in 1999, followed by Reverend Gregory L. Macon in 2001. In 2007, Reverend LeVelle Brown, Sr. answered the call to lead the Little Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church. That same year, the church made a momentous move to its current location at 411 North Long, leaving behind cherished memories but embracing the promise of a new beginning. The Little Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church stands today as a testament to the enduring power of faith, community, and the unwavering belief in the possibility of overcoming challenges.
