A chilling memory hangs heavy in the air here at the Little India Riot Site. This unassuming spot on Race Course Road witnessed a night of chaos a decade ago.

The Little India Riot Site isn’t marked by a grand monument. It’s a simple intersection. Yet this intersection holds immense historical significance. It’s where a tragic accident sparked a riot that shocked Singapore. A construction worker Mr Sakthivel Kumaravelu died after being struck by a bus.

The night began with a fatal traffic accident. Mr Kumaravelu a 33-year-old from India was drunk. He had been trying to board a bus that was already full. He fell under the bus and died instantly. His death ignited a firestorm of anger among fellow workers. Rumours spread rapidly. People believed the bus driver and timekeeper were responsible. The bus was attacked. Projectiles flew. The riot escalated quickly.

The scene descended into pandemonium. The crowd swelled to hundreds. They threw bottles shoes and even metal drain covers. Emergency vehicles arrived but were also targeted. Police officers and firefighters were injured. The riot raged for two hours. Vehicles were overturned. Some were even set on fire.

It was a night of intense violence fuelled by misunderstanding and rumour. The COI report detailed the chaos. It highlighted communication breakdowns among first responders. The report also revealed that many rioters were intoxicated. Alcohol was a major contributing factor.

Amazingly no one died during the riot itself. But the damage was substantial. Over $530000 worth of property was destroyed. The incident left 62 people injured.

Today the Little India Riot Site is a sobering reminder. A reminder of a night of intense emotion and miscommunication. It highlights the importance of clear communication and responsible behaviour. New bus terminals were built. Alcohol restrictions were implemented. The area is now much safer and better organized. The Little India Riot Site stands as a testament to a difficult past and the efforts made to prevent such events from happening again.
