What was simply a vacant plot of land not long ago, now boasts a plaque etched with the story of Little Egypt. The plaque, placed in 2018 by the Texas Historical Commission, tells the story of a vibrant Black community existing here from 1883 until 1962. Little Egypt was a small settlement of about 30 acres, with a population of about 200 people. The community was named by its founders to commemorate their journey out of slavery. Its namesake is obviously from the Bible, referring to the Egyptian exile of the Israelites. The early settlers of Little Egypt were former slaves like Jeff and Hanna Hill who purchased the original plot of land in 1883. By the 1920s, the Egypt Chapel Baptist Church and a one-room school were added to the community. Over the next forty years, urbanization slowly encroached. In 1962, land developers bought the land and the community was forced to move. Despite the loss of their homes, the community persevered. Today, the Little Egypt marker stands as a reminder of the resilience of a Black community in the face of adversity.
