Did you know Liston College in Auckland wasn’t always in its current location? Liston College a Catholic boys’ school in Henderson boasts a rich history. It opened in 1974. The school initially used classrooms at Holy Cross School. Two Christian Brothers Br G J Wellsmore and Br J P McKean taught the first 72 students. The students were divided into Form One J and Form One M. These initials honored Archbishop Liston’s Christian names James Michael. Imagine those first days homework assigned on day one.
Liston College’s founding was a long-held dream of Archbishop Liston. He envisioned a Catholic boys’ school in Henderson. The Oblates of Mary Immaculate were initially considered to staff the school. However the Christian Brothers ultimately took on the mission. Before Liston College opened St Dominic’s Catholic College was the only Catholic high school in West Auckland.
The official opening of Liston College in November 1975 was a momentous occasion. John Mackey the ninth Catholic Bishop of Auckland presided. Archbishop Liston was also present. He sadly passed away the following year. The new school buildings gymnasium and grounds were ready by the first term of 1975. Before construction the site was simply an open paddock with an old house. Brother Wellsmore oversaw the building programme. He also established the curriculum and fostered the school’s unique spirit.
Liston College has enjoyed strong parental and community support. A thriving PTFA organized various activities and fundraising efforts. The Friday night flea market was particularly successful raising $40000 annually at its peak. This money funded sports equipment a computer room and teaching resources. Generous donations shaped Liston College. John and Betty Rose donated the engineering workshop. Henry Norcross gave the main entrance crucifix. The Glamuzina family donated the school chapel. This chapel with a Colin McCahon window stands as a tribute to their generosity.
In 1982 Liston College became an integrated school. The Christian Brothers’ presence peaked at six brothers on staff. By 1985 only Brother Sisson remained as Principal. Mr Frank Huckle became the first lay principal marking the end of the Christian Brothers’ direct involvement. Brother J D O’Neill was the last Christian Brother to teach at Liston College. He taught there from 1991-1994. Mr Chris Rooney served as principal for 21 years. He retired in 2021 and was honored with a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2023 for his service to education. Mr Steven Dooley is the current principal.
Today Liston College thrives. It continues to provide a Catholic education for boys. It maintains a strong sense of community and academic excellence. The legacy of Archbishop Liston and the Christian Brothers lives on. It is a place where young men grow into men of presence love courage and excellence. The school’s motto In Christ We Live truly encapsulates its spirit.
