Step into Lisbjerg Skov a sprawling 280-hectare woodland. Imagine its history unfolding before you. This is more than just trees and paths. Lisbjerg Skov boasts a rich tapestry woven from centuries of use and careful planning.
The southern 160 hectares belong to Aarhus Municipality. This area shelters Lisbjerg Gammel Skov the old forest. This 60-hectare woodland is a testament to time. Past generations practiced careful forestry. They selectively harvested trees. They managed the forest for their needs. This contrasts with Lisbjerg Ny Skov the new forest. Planted between 1990 and 1996 it shows a different approach. This careful management continues. Cattle and horses graze. This prevents the open areas from becoming overgrown.
Lisbjerg Gammel Skov is primarily beech trees with a mix of ash and maple. Smaller groves punctuate the woods. There are bogs. There are ponds and marshes. In contrast Lisbjerg Ny Skov offers more variety. You’ll find woodlands clearings meadows gravel pits and hedges. Oak beech ash birch pine and larch trees vary the landscape. The mix of trees creates unique beauty throughout the year.
This biodiversity extends beyond the trees. Over 350 species of fungi have been identified. Some are rare like the yellow spathula fungus the golden cap and the soot russula. Over 300 plant species thrive here. Some are unusual like the small larkspur thyme and the long-stalked weaseltail.
The varied landscape supports a rich insect life. More than 35 butterfly species live here. These include the swallowtail the brimstone the copper butterfly the emperor and the iris. Many wood-boring beetle species inhabit the forest. Among them are the small bumble bee the Jutland flower beetle the small wasp beetle and the stag beetle. A two-year study revealed over 60 species of small animals in temporary ponds. These ranged from flatworms and leeches to mayflies caddisflies and water beetles.
Lisbjerg Skov is also a haven for birds. Around 100 species have been sighted since 2000. Common woodland birds such as the sparrowhawk woodcock willow tit and woodcock are present. Also spotted are tawny owls great horned owls ravens and red kites.
Lisbjerg Skov offers recreational facilities. In 2010 an Iron Age-themed shelter was built. It can accommodate 45 overnight guests. It includes palisades and a watchtower. A playground was added in 2014 in the Kimbrerdalen a former gravel pit. It has a zip line and climbing equipment.
