They dreamed for over 50 years to have their own field. The Lions achieved that dream on September 21 2019.
Lion Field stands within the Lions for Hope Sports Complex. It represents more than just a place to play. It embodies a vision of community upliftment. The field is located at 2637 West Polk Avenue.
J. Tyke Nollman’s name graces this field. He was a past president of the Chicago Lions. Nollman passed away in 2015. The field is a tribute to his commitment.
The Chicago Lions partnered with Chicago Hope Academy. Together they transformed an eight-acre parcel into a sporting haven. This collaboration underscores the field’s dual purpose. It serves both the rugby club and the local community.
Initially the vision was smaller. It started with a single grass field and a clubhouse. The vision grew into two artificial turf fields. These fields will be able to be used year-round. A more expansive building will have multiple uses. A dome will allow for year-round use in Chicago weather.
Lion Field is not just for the Chicago Lions. It extends its arms to the youth of the Near West Side. The Chicago Lions believe that athletics offer a proactive solution. They provide a safe place to learn and play. They also provide after-school programs.
The field itself is state-of-the-art. It features artificial turf made by Limonta. Ecotherm serves as the infill. This is an upgrade from the usual rubber found in most fields. Regulation size ensures top-tier play. The field is 100 meters by 70 meters. Ten-meter deep endzones provide ample space.
The opening day was a historic event. Over 500 people attended on September 21 2019. The day began with games for Rookie Rugby and middle school kids. High schoolers and club teams followed.
The Lions have big plans for the future. They plan a second artificial turf field. They also plan a seasonal dome for year-round use. A multipurpose building will house locker rooms, concessions, and offices.
