Established in 1960 L’Institut Paris Region has a rich history. It began as the Institut d’aménagement et d’urbanisme de la Région parisienne or IAURP. This was a pivotal time for urban planning in the Paris region. The IAURP played a crucial role in shaping the region’s development. It oversaw the creation of new towns and the expansion of public transportation.
Paul Delouvrier a key figure in French urban planning led the IAURP. He’s considered the father of the new towns. Delouvrier’s vision transformed the Parisian landscape. He significantly influenced the IAURP’s work and legacy. The IAURP later became the Institut d’aménagement et d’urbanisme de la région Île-de-France or IAURIF. This name change reflected its expanded responsibilities.
Over the years L’Institut Paris Region’s influence grew. It became the largest urban planning agency in France. Its expertise extended beyond France. L’Institut Paris Region now works internationally. Its projects reach the Mediterranean Africa Latin America the Middle East and Asia. It’s involved in numerous international networks. These include ICOMOS IUCN Metrex and the World Cities Culture Forum. Its extensive network provides valuable opportunities for collaboration and comparative analysis. The organization’s mission is to conduct studies and work for the Île-de-France region and its partners. L’Institut Paris Region tackles numerous areas. These areas include urban planning transportation environment and economy. It supports local policies helping communes and intermunicipalities. It also conducts studies for various organizations both in France and abroad.
In 2019 L’Institut Paris Region underwent a transformation. It transitioned from a foundation to a 1901 association. This change modernized its structure. It streamlined its operations. This further solidified its position as a leading urban planning and environmental agency. Today L’Institut Paris Region continues its mission. It remains dedicated to shaping the future of the Île-de-France region and beyond. Its work reflects a commitment to sustainable development and international collaboration. L’Institut Paris Region’s dedication to research and data-driven decision-making ensures it remains at the forefront of urban planning. The Institut’s current director general is Nicolas Bauquet. He assumed his position in July 2022. The institute moved to new offices in January 2025. They’re located at 66-68 Rue Pleyel in Saint-Denis.
