Hidden amongst a “line of lakes,” as its Dakota name suggests, lies Lino Lakes. Lino Lakes is more than just a collection of shimmering waters. It’s a place where the echoes of Dakota hunters and the footsteps of early settlers intertwine. Lino Lakes, nestled in Anoka County, Minnesota, pulsates with a history as rich and vibrant as the autumn leaves that grace its trees. Originally part of Centerville Township, Lino Lakes officially became a village in 1955. This move was not just about a name change. It was a declaration of independence, driven by the need for paved roads and a distinct identity. The name itself, Lino Lakes, is a curious blend of history and happenstance, born from a discussion in Tim Manning’s barbershop. One resident suggested “Line ‘O Oakes,” inspired by a local tavern and the area’s numerous lakes. Another, remembering the Land O’ Lakes region in Wisconsin, proposed “Line O’ Lakes,” which eventually evolved into the name we know today: Lino Lakes. Before European settlers arrived, the Dakota people thrived on this land, rich with wild rice and game. They left behind burial grounds, silent testaments to their deep connection with the land. In the 1850s, settlers from Canada and the eastern United States began to arrive, establishing communities on both sides of the lakes. Descendants of families like the Ramsdens, Speisers, Wenzels, Cardinals, LaMottes, Houles, and Dupres still call Lino Lakes home, a living link to the city’s pioneer past. In 2010, Lino Lakes made headlines by declaring English its official language, a move that sparked debate about inclusivity and community. More recently, in 2024, the proposed Madinah Lakes housing development ignited controversy and accusations of racism, reminding us that the story of Lino Lakes, like any city, is a complex tapestry of progress and challenges. Lino Lakes isn’t just a place on a map. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of community, where the whispers of the past mingle with the hopes of the future.
