High above the Elbe River, Lingnerschloss stands as a silent witness to Dresden’s rich history. The Lingnerschloss, also known as Villa Stockhausen, isn’t your typical castle. It began its life in the mid-19th century, not as a fortress, but as a stately villa. Commissioned by Prince Albrecht of Prussia, it was intended as a residence for Baron von Stockhausen. Imagine the scene in 1853, the newly completed villa, gleaming in the sun, a testament to the architect Adolph Lohse’s vision. The surrounding park, lush and vibrant, offered stunning views of the Elbe Valley. This was a place of tranquility, a world away from the bustling city below. The Lingnerschloss, however, truly came into its own when Karl August Lingner, the inventor of Odol mouthwash, purchased the estate in 1906. Lingner, a man of innovation, transformed the villa and its grounds. He installed a private inclined elevator, a marvel of engineering at the time, to whisk him from the valley floor to his hilltop retreat. He even had a special organ installed, one that could transmit its melodies via telephone to his friends. Lingner’s vision extended beyond mere technological advancements. He commissioned renowned artists like Franz von Stuck and Wilhelm Kreis to redesign the interiors. The dining room became a showcase of art, with a frieze featuring replicas of Luca della Robbia’s reliefs from Florence’s Duomo. Lingner’s legacy is woven into the very fabric of the Lingnerschloss. He bequeathed the estate to the city of Dresden, stipulating that the park remain open to the public and the main building house an affordable café or restaurant. Lingner’s generosity, however, was met with a turbulent future. The Lingnerschloss survived the devastating bombing of Dresden in 1945 but served variously as a hospital, a Soviet command center, and a student dormitory. Years of neglect followed, leaving the villa vulnerable to vandalism and decay. The story, however, doesn’t end there. In 2002, a dedicated group of citizens formed the Lingner Castle Support Association. They embarked on an ambitious restoration project, determined to bring Lingner’s vision back to life. Today, the Lingnerschloss stands proudly overlooking Dresden, a testament to its remarkable past and the enduring spirit of its community.
