Amidst the bustling cityscape of Shanghai, Lin’En Church stands as a quiet testament to faith and resilience. Lin’En Church witnessed a tumultuous period in Chinese history. It’s a story of unwavering belief, tested by political upheaval and personal sacrifice. The Lin family’s history is intertwined with the rise of Christianity in China. Their story begins with a humble fisherman, Lin Yongbiao, drawn to the unfamiliar teachings of missionaries in his rural Fujian village. His son, Lin Dao’an, followed a path forged by missionary influence, becoming a doctor trained in Western medicine. Lin Dao’an’s son, Lin Pu-chi, rose to prominence as an Anglican priest, educated at St. John’s University in Shanghai and even studying theology in Philadelphia. Lin Pu-chi married Ni Guizhen, sister of the influential Christian leader Watchman Nee. This connection would bring both solace and suffering. Lin Pu-chi’s steadfast faith was tested during the anti-Christian movement of 1927. He refused to renounce his beliefs, even in the face of violence. He served as dean of the Anglican cathedral in Fuzhou and later in Shanghai. Ni Guizhen, drawn to the more intimate worship of her brother’s Little Flock movement, eventually left Lin Pu-chi’s church, a decision that would have profound consequences. The family endured unimaginable hardships during the Cultural Revolution. Their home was ransacked, family members were persecuted, and Ni Guizhen faced accusations due to her connection with Watchman Nee. Lin’En Church represents not only a place of worship but also the enduring spirit of the Lin family and countless others who held onto their faith through decades of adversity. Their story is a powerful reminder of the human capacity for resilience and the enduring power of belief. The Lin family’s story, deeply rooted in Lin’En Church and the broader context of Christianity in Shanghai, echoes the struggles and triumphs of faith during a period of immense change in China.
