From a technical school to a math and science academy, Lindblom Technical High School’s journey reflects the changing landscape of education and opportunity. Lindblom Technical High School first opened its doors in 1919. The building, designed by Arthur Hussander, stands as a testament to the Beaux-Arts architectural style. Its neo-classical facade, with Roman columns, exudes a sense of grandeur. The school’s interior is equally impressive, boasting a 2,000-seat auditorium, two gymnasiums, a study hall with a barrel-vaulted ceiling and skylights, a swimming pool, and even a greenhouse. Lindblom Technical High School was initially designed to prepare students for vocations in industrial and skilled trades. This focus reflected the needs of the time, with a high immigrant population seeking education for assimilation and advancement. However, the post-World War II era brought a shift in the job market. Industrial jobs declined, and the demand for college-educated professionals increased. Lindblom Technical High School adapted to this change by modifying its curriculum to emphasize college preparation. In 1999, the school was renamed Lindblom College Prep High School. This marked a new chapter in its history, reflecting its commitment to preparing students for higher education. The new millennium brought challenges. In 2003, the original site closed for renovations. Students were temporarily relocated to an elementary school several miles away. However, this disruption was temporary. Lindblom Technical High School reopened in 2005, transformed into the Lindblom Math & Science Academy. The $42 million renovation upgraded the school’s facilities and systems. New computer and science labs were installed, reflecting the school’s renewed focus on math and science education. The grand reopening was a momentous occasion, celebrated by the Lindblom Alumni Association and the Board of Education. The school welcomed its first class of freshmen, marking a new era in its long and storied history. In 2010, the Chicago City Council designated the Lindblom building as a Chicago landmark. This recognition cemented its place as a significant historical and architectural landmark in the city. Lindblom Math & Science Academy stands as a symbol of resilience, adaptation, and a commitment to providing quality education to generations of Chicago students.
