Ten miles north of downtown Chicago lies Lincolnwood a vibrant village with a rich history. Did you know that Lincolnwood wasn’t always called Lincolnwood? Originally settled by the Potawatomi Native Americans its story begins long before European arrival.

In 1856 Johann Tess and his family arrived from Germany. They purchased 30 acres of land establishing the area’s first European settlement. This land was once part of a vast territory ceded by the Potawatomi in the Treaty of St Louis. Imagine the challenges these early settlers faced farming this land. The Halfway House Saloon opened in 1873 serving weary travelers on the treacherous roads.

The arrival of the Chicago and North Western Railway in nearby Niles Center in 1891 spurred growth. The completion of the North Shore Channel in 1909 further transformed the area. The once easily flooded prairie became manageable. More residents arrived leading to the opening of more taverns and saloons.

Because only incorporated municipalities could issue liquor licenses 359 residents incorporated the village in 1911. They named it Tessville after Johann Tess. During Prohibition Tessville became known for its speakeasies and gambling dens.

In 1931 Henry A Proesel a grandson of one of the original settlers became mayor. He spearheaded a beautification project. Ten thousand elm trees were planted along the village streets. This transformed Tessville’s image. The name Lincolnwood was adopted in 1936 reflecting both the state highway Lincoln Avenue and the majestic elm trees.

The Edens Expressway’s opening in 1951 led to significant population growth. Lincolnwood flourished. Bell & Howell’s relocation in 1942 further boosted the local economy. Today Lincolnwood boasts a thriving community. It features thirteen parks numerous amenities and a strong commitment to the arts. The Lincolnwood Chamber Orchestra and the art gallery in Village Hall are testaments to this.

The Lincolnwood Public Library houses a substantial historical collection. It also includes a Library of Things. You can borrow items like bike repair kits and photography equipment. Lincolnwood Town Center is a bustling indoor mall with more than 100 shops. This demonstrates how Lincolnwood seamlessly blends its rich past with a modern vibrant future. From its Native American roots to its current status as a thriving suburb Lincolnwood’s story is a captivating journey.
