Established in 1970 Limbongan Batu Maung began as Batu Maung Slipway. It started by repairing oil and fuel barges. By the early 1970s the shipyard expanded its services. It began repairing government patrol crafts. The shipyard’s relocation and expansion came with the development of Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia Kompleks. This new site boasted seven slipway systems. Through the 1980s the focus was on patrol boat repair. The shipyard transitioned towards building fiberglass and aluminum boats. These were for commercial pleasure and government uses.

The 1990s saw the construction of a specialist fiberglass workshop. This was for building fiberglass interceptor boats for the Royal Customs & Excise Department Malaysia. A humidity control room ensured quality control. It was crucial for producing Class-approved patrol boats.

Mid-1990s brought further expansion. Limbongan Batu Maung invested in 26 acres of land. This would allow for steel and aluminum vessel production. The goal was to specialize in aluminum vessels. These would be for patrol boats commercial and pleasure crafts up to 35 meters. Limbongan Batu Maung’s history is one of growth and adaptation. It reflects the changing needs of Penang’s maritime industry. From humble beginnings it transformed into a significant shipyard. It plays a vital role in Penang’s economy.
