Here at Lillydale Lake, prepare to be amazed. Lillydale Lake isn’t just a body of water. It’s a vibrant hub of recreation and a testament to innovative engineering. This artificial lake and wetlands area in Lilydale spans 28 hectares. The park surrounding Lillydale Lake covers over 100 hectares. That is equivalent to 250 acres. It’s a sprawling landscape designed for everyone to enjoy.

Let’s dive into the story of Lillydale Lake. Areas of Lilydale were low-lying. They were susceptible to flooding from the Olinda Creek. Surveyor James Blackburn identified this site in 1853 as a potential water catchment area. The Yan Yean Reservoir was built instead. In 1969, the local council envisioned a 65-hectare park. Funds were lacking and the project never happened. Severe floods in September 1984 prompted a new proposal. The construction of Lillydale Lake would prevent future flooding. It would provide recreational facilities for the community. Construction began in 1988. Lillydale Lake was completed in June 1990. The grand opening was on 7 July 1990.

Notice the 440-metre-long dam wall. At the northern end, you can see the ruins of Cashin’s flour mill. It dates back to the 1850s. The name Lillydale retains the earliest spelling. It also honors the former Lillydale Shire.

Today, Lillydale Lake offers more than just flood control. There are over 10 kilometres of shared trails. Locals often walk, run, or cycle around the lake. It is perfect for fitness enthusiasts. There is also a community room and meeting facilities. Families will love the monster playground. It offers fun for children of all ages. The playground includes a splash pad with water activities. It also has a sensory creek bed with mushroom sculptures. Kids can climb on platypus and wood duck sculptures. A giant basket swing and double flying fox add to the excitement. The playground also features a spinning carousel.

Lillydale Lake is also equipped with accessible features. The all-abilities playground includes a Liberty Swing. It allows wheelchair users to enjoy swinging. A special key is required. It can be obtained free of charge from Community Links. The park has accessible bathrooms for people with disabilities. These bathrooms include an automated changing bed. An automated ceiling hoist ensures comfort and convenience.

Do you enjoy water activities? Non-powered boats are permitted on Lillydale Lake. The maximum boat length is 4.5 meters. The keel depth should be up to 1 meter. Fishing is also allowed.

Dog owners, take note. Lillydale Lake has two designated off-leash areas. Dogs must be on a lead in all other areas of the park. Please observe park signage.

Yarra Ranges Council and Melbourne Water worked together. Their collaboration limited construction’s impact. Qualified ecologists relocated over 2,300 native aquatic animals. They were safely moved to the adjacent Olinda Creek.

Lillydale Lake is more than just a lake. It’s a community hub. It blends history, recreation, and environmental consciousness. As you explore, remember the visionaries. They transformed a flood-prone area. They turned it into a beloved destination for all. Lillydale Lake stands as a testament to what thoughtful planning and community spirit can achieve.
