Lillstreet Art Center started humbly. It began in 1975 as Robbins Clay. Bruce Robbins founded it as a clay manufacturing company. It was located on Halsted and Grand. Martin Cohen later joined as a business partner. Together, they sold Robbins Clay and acquired a former horse stable on Lill Street in Lincoln Park. The name Lill Street Studios stuck. They expanded their offerings to include ceramics classes and workshops.
The demand for space grew. In 2003, Lillstreet relocated to its current home. The space is a former gear factory on Ravenswood Avenue. Today, Lillstreet Art Center is a multifaceted art center. It offers classes and studio space for artists working in various media.
Inside Lillstreet Art Center, you will discover a creative retreat. It is a place to relax and find inspiration. You can enjoy meditative creative time and make new friends. Lillstreet fosters a supportive community. Artists of all backgrounds, ages, and skill levels learn together.
Lillstreet offers classes and workshops. They cover ceramics, metalsmithing and jewelry, and textiles. You can also explore printmaking and book arts, as well as drawing and painting. Kidstreet is a special program. It includes multimedia classes and summer camps for children and families.
New artists gain confidence here. First-Time Artist classes teach foundational skills. These skills are needed to begin working in a particular medium. Lillstreet supports artists. Their annual Artist-in-Residence program offers career opportunities. It also provides workspace for emerging and mid-career artists.
